2025 Art Direction Trend Predictions

Hi everyone. It is already 2025, and this post took me longer to write than expected. But when it comes to predictions, it is never too late. These ideas are based on my own observations of trends, cultural shifts, and where I believe we are heading creatively this year. I had already teased this post in my 2025 ins- and outs but it took me a bit to write what I was thinking into words.

disclaimer: this email might be cut off in emails.

We have been in a phase of perfection and curation. Campaigns, homes, and even personal lives shared on social media often feel overly polished and carefully curated. There are tutorials on how to do photo dumps or take mirror selfies. At the same time, lo-fi content has become trendy too, but not in an actual lo-fi way. But in a way where content that is shot on iPhone are deliberate because brands want to speak to Gen Z, and all the content turned into a sea of sameness, jumping onto the same trends and sounds. While this minimalism also had its moment, it is becoming stale. The current zeitgeist suggests a counter-reaction is brewing, one that favours playfulness, imperfection, and storytelling over sterile visuals and rigid control, even over the things that seem ‘uncurated’. I am ready to have fun again!

History shows us how trends are shaped by the times. After the rigidity and structure of the 1950s, the 1960s exploded with colour, rebellion, and creative freedom. In the 2000s, Y2K minimalism, think icy blue iMacs and sleek technology, gave way to the chaotic layering and maximalism of Tumblr aesthetics. Today, we are standing on the edge of a similar shift. The rise of artificial intelligence and oversaturation of trends on social media have left people craving something real and personal and for not just brands, but also people to really craft their own identity that can survive without the algorithm and access to micro-trends.

This moment presents a creative opportunity for brands. Those who avoid jumping on every passing trend and instead create their own distinct world can stand out. Trends move fast, and while social media rewards quick wins, it can leave brands with an identity crisis if they chase every viral moment. The strength lies in building something sustainable and memorable.

Disclaimer: These trend predictions are based on my own observations and opinion, as much as I could’ve, I can’t predict the future. Especially in a fast changing world, it’s something I am also low-key hoping to see, but you will never know.

For paid subscribers, I am doing a big review today and tomorrow and will send out all feedback at once. If you haven’t submitted your art direction project yet, you can do it anytime in the month January. But if you do it earlier, you can get feedback and guidance twice. At the end of the month I will do a wrap up post with some guidance and tips in case you want to bring this project to life for your portfolio.
